The person who committed the assault may face direct civil claims depending on the conduct and resulting harm. Practical questions include proof, damages, insurance coverage if any, collectible assets, and how the civil case will interact with the criminal prosecution.
When another defendant may need to be investigated
In some cases, the facts raise a separate question about a business, property owner, employer, school, event operator, institution, or other party. That does not mean the third party is automatically liable. A viable civil theory must be based on the third party’s own duty and conduct.

Why preservation should start early
Commercial video can be overwritten quickly, employees can leave, and electronic records can be deleted in ordinary business operations. A criminal investigation may preserve some evidence but not every item needed for a civil negligence theory.
Do not assume the criminal case stops civil deadlines
Civil statutes of limitation and special claim procedures operate separately. The applicable deadline depends on the claim and defendant. A victim considering civil remedies should obtain fact-specific advice rather than wait automatically for sentencing or completion of the criminal case.
Restitution and civil damages
Criminal restitution can address qualifying economic losses. A civil action can involve different categories of damages and different defendants. Payments and offsets may need to be coordinated to avoid treating the two systems as if they were unrelated.
